Friends in India and many other countries we have hard water in bore well mostly.
Solving this hard water problem is very costly. But I will show you a very cheap way to solve this hard water issue at home. Of course there is a traditional cheap iron water treatment i.e. sand filter. But maintaining sand filter is very hard and time consuming.
Note: Those who can spend some for an iron filter and can’t give 5 minutes at least twice in a week should avoid this trick.
See in the market we can find there are many crystal chemicals like Alum which are used to clean/soft hard water. We will just use this Alum like chemical to soft/clean hard water. In using Alum there is a problem that every time we need to dissolve some amount of Alum in order to clean/soft the hard water. Otherwise if we just keep a big amount of Alum in our tank the water will make more acidic and a bit hard water. So to get a better result we need to add a regulated amount of Alum in water. Here is the problem we can’t go and add Alum every time. We need an automatic system which will add approximate amount of Alum in the water.
We need to develop an easy automatic system to add Alum in the hard water.
Every water tank has an inlet. We will just keep the Alum very near hanging from the inlet so that whenever water comes in it will take Alum from the hanging pot. Very near hanging from inlet, because we have to keep the Alum above the overflow pipe so that if the water tank is full that time also the Alum wouldn’t touch the water. If the Alum will the water the whole amount will be dissolved and we will not get good result out of it. To make this easy automatic system to add Alum in the hard water just follow the below steps-
1- Make small holes in the inlet pipe, one opposite another as shown in the picture. So that we can hang the Alum pot from the inlet pipe.
2- Cut a bottle in to two and make two small holes one opposite another in both pieces as shown in the picture.
3- Make some small holes and big window in the bottle pot as shown in the picture so that the water falls on it can flow through the Alum crystal kept in it, not just over flow from top of the pot.
4- Now using tie or string hang these two pieces of bottle just below the inlet pipe so that during water filling water falls on these bottle pots.
5- Now keeps some big crystals of Alum on the bottle pots, now your automatic Alum adding system is ready to work.
6- Whenever you refill water keep it for 4 to 5 hours for batter result. Because cleaning water using Alum takes some time. We can also use a separate reservoir tank to rest and clean the water than use it.
Note: We have to check in two/three days whether the Alum crystals we kept are completely dissolved/finished. We can also increase this two/three days checking time by using a bigger pots and bigger Alum crystal. Just we have to keep in mind that the pots shouldn’t touch the water when water tank is full of water.

Iron water/hard water is a big issue in most the places. The solutions for this problem available in the market are very costly. Most of the people can’t afford/maintain an iron remover/water softener. Many companies offer cheap water softeners but those unfortunately doesn’t work. Traditional sand filter is very hard to maintain. So there must be an easy and cheaper way to remove iron from bore well water or hard water. In this blog we just tried this method, we found it works and can be useful those who can’t afford expensive iron remover filters or water softener.
