How to choose which submersible pump is best- For your bore well

Hello friends welcome to Daily Life Hacks, in this blog we will see how to select which submersible pump is best- for your bore well in step by step-
Which submersible pump is best
Which submersible pump is best

Step 1 How much below is our water level: We need to know what is the minimum depth where we can install our submersible pump. To know this first, we need to find the water level below our ground. This factor depends in which geographic region you are living as well as the season. To find this you can ask your bore well digger or just tie tight a light thing with a long rope, then tie tight the other side with a strong pole. Now let the thing inside the well holding with your hand, when it reaches the water you must feel in your hand. Then calculate the length of rope. Another way to find just search ‘ground in India’. As shown bellow. Here we found its 5 to 10 meters below the ground.

First step is clear that we have to install the submersible pump more than 5 meter below the ground.

Step 2 How much below from the water level: Consider my bore well is of 4 inch in diameter. Suppose my water level is at 5 meters below the ground. Now if I install bore well submersible pump at 20 meters (15m below the current water level)- in this case we get volume = Ï€ × d2/4 × h i.e. Ï€ × (0.0508m)2/4 ×15m= Approximately 121.61 liters water ready to pump out from the well. When the submersible pump starts, during the time when it pumps out 121 liters of water, bore well will get some time to refill the well again. Thus the well will not get dried out of water during continuous pumping. This refilling time is dependable in our geographical area and conditions of water layers below the bore well. If refilling time is greater than pumping out time 121 liters of water (case in the example above) than installing our submersible pump is not successful. If it becomes unsuccessful then we must know there is fault in our calculation. In some cases of unsuccessful we can make it successful by adjusting ‘minimum depth where we can install our submersible pump’. We must install the submersible pump deeper as much as it is possible, to get more water ready to pump out so that the pumping out time is greater. But there is a limitation in installing submersible pump deeper. These are 'head range' and 'diameter of well up to that much depth'. In my case it was diameter of the well.

Step 3 Selection of desired Head Range: Selection of Head Range can be done by knowing Head Range of the submersible pump. But considering Head range, we need to deal with flow range and another factor that is Pressure. So to make it easier and simple we will find an approximate head range only considering flow range. To find out the Head Range of the submersible pump we will search “flow rate of ‘model no of pump’” in google. The search result will as shown bellow-

Which submersible pump is best

After searching “flow rate of ‘model no of pump’” we need to focus some main parameters.
  • Out let size: This is the size of pipe in delivery section of the pump and is specific for this result showing in the search.
  • Power Rating: Indicating the power of the submersible pump.
  • Head Range: This showing maximum and minimum Head Range of the respective Flow Range.
  • Flow Range: This is showing maximum and minimum flow of water per minute or hour. Flow range is inversely proportional to Head Range.
Note: In the above search result it is showing that Head Range: 56-30 Meter and Flow Range is 20-90 LPM. That is meaning at 56-meter head length flow is 20 LPM and at 30-meter Head length flow is 90 LPM.

Conclusion: Which submersible pump is best- For my bore well:

My Water Level- 5m below the ground.
What is the maximum depth I can install my submersible pump: Maximum because deeper I go, I will get more water ready to be pumped out. Thus bore well will get some time to refill again and the well will not get dried out of water during continuous pumping. In my case I choose maximum depth 65 feet because my bore well was 70 feet 4-inch diameter than 40 feet 3.5-inch diameter. So I could not use 3.5-inch diameter because of the pump size.

Note: In going deeper we should not install the pump at the bottom of the well/main pipe. We should place it at list 5 feet above the bottom of the well/main pipe so that the water flow is proper inside the well.

Selection of desired Head Range: In the above example pump was installed at 20 meter below the ground. The storage tank was 8 meter above the ground. So total head length is 28-meter vertical. So I will get approximately 60 LPM with a 1 HP submersible pump. Some efficiency will be lost in bents of the delivery pipe and voltage drop in the line. Now I can assume 1 HP submersible pump at 20 meter below the ground can lift approximately 3600 LPH at 8-meter height storage tank. So I checked this information comparing with my old Jet pump of 1 HP. In old Jet pump it was written 1800/960 LPH. Also I recalled my memory and found that old Jet pump used to take around 20 min to fill 500 Liters storage. That means old Jet pump had a flow rate of 1500 LPH. So installing a submersible pump of 1 HP below 20 meter to get a flow rate of 3600 LPH wouldn’t dry out my well because in this flow rate it will take more than 2 mins to pump out 121 liters of water even if refilling stops. As my water layers were good that's why 2 min refilling time was enough. Now you may think why I didn't go for 0.5 HP submersible pump? Answer is 0.5 HP pump has very less head range and it's not good for future if the height of the building is increased,

In case refilling time is not enough, well gets dried out after running 5/10 mins and you already bought a submersible pump than there is a trick to overcome. You can make small 2/3 holes(6mm) in the delivery pipe inside the well. However this trick not efficient because some of the water you are pumping twice to overcome well drying out issue.

FAQ:

1. Which company is best for submersible water pump?

Answer: There are many good company submersible pumps available in the market. In my personal opinion you can buy Crompton and Kirloskar and Jindal.

2. How do I choose a good submersible pump?

Answer. In choosing a good submersible pump you should consider these factors-

Head Range: You should select a good head range comparing with flow rate which fits for your desire- not less not so high as shown above, because high head range can dry out your well for some time in continuous pumping.

Cooling type- Pumping water leads to increasing temperature in the pump which should be cooled down as fast as possible. So for irrigation purpose where pump works for long hours, you should buy a better cooling pump with coolant instead of water.

3. Which pump is best for home use?

Answer: Normally 1 HP pressure pumps are good for home use. It can vary with the depth of your bore well.

4. How do I choose a submersible pump size?

Answer: Submersible pump size is chosen by the bore well pipe size and how deep the pipe is available. Sometimes in a bore well there are different sizes of pipe in top and bottom.

5. Which inch Bore well is best?

Answer: 4.5-inch diameter bore well is best in size for submersible pumps, because 3 inch to 4 inch submersible pumps are easily available in the market.
